A microcosm of Austin Weird: Behind the scenes of 'The Trailer Park Show'

"The Trailer Park Show" gang for the Christmas 2015 episode. Pictured (left to right) are James "Slow Pokey" Ritter, Legislative Director for Rep. Gilbert Pena Mikael Garcia, Travis GOP Outreach Director Michael Lee, and Austin LULAC leader Gavino Fernandez.
Is it a political round table for conservative issues? A public television free-for-all? Maybe a showcase for locals to maunder about the day's news?

"It's all those things and more," according to the host of a longtime fixture of Austin cable access.

Not unlike many shows on a public access TV channel, "The Trailer Park Show" is an unusual spectacle. During the recording of the show's annual Christmas Episode, a taping room at the Channel Austin studios on Northwestern Avenue featured a dose of the usual political commentary panel and Texas House Legislative Director Mikael Garcia and Travis GOP Outreach Director Michael Lee, as well as some special guests: the Black and Tan Comedy Tour doing an impressive improv routine, an abbreviated set (thanks to a blown amplified fuse) from a band featuring local guitarist Fritz Funderburgh kicking out some Blues-Rock tunes to rival any show in town that evening in the Live Music Capital, and anyone from the audience the host could rope in at the last minute.

And all done live. In other words, a microcosm of what keeps Austin Weird, as well as a picture of the by-the-bootstraps activism that marks the Austin conservative movement.

Fox 7: Travis GOP jumps in on effort to save ridesharing apps

KTBC-TV, Channel 7, in covering the effort to save companies such as Uber and Lyft in the City of Austin, gave some credit to the Travis County Republican Party for its efforts.

According to Fox 7 Austin:
The Travis County Republican Party is all for this:
"Supporting this petition drive is a natural fit for Travis County Republicans, as we have always supported economic freedom and free speech. If ridesharing apps were as dangerous as their detractors say they are, then consumers would have already 'voted with their feet.' and found other transportation options. Why punish the success of companies such as Lyft and Uber? This is the free market dynamism at its best," said Andy Hogue with the Travis County Republicans.
The petition is available to sign at Austin Java from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. and from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. The coalition says they only need 20,000 signatures but they're going for 30,000 just in case.

The group says once they have their signatures, they'll present the petition to the city clerk for validation.

Fiscal conservatives top ABJ's list of top economic development leaders

Austin District 6 City Councilman Don Zimmerman
It's a good day in Austin when a Republican City Council member and the Governor of Texas make the list of the city's top Five Economic Development Leaders to Watch in 2016.

Gov. Greg Abbott and District 6 Austin City Councilman Don Zimmerman made the list, compiled by the Austin Business Journal today. The article highlighted Zimmerman's work in opposing ride-sharing app regulations (Uber Technologies CEO Travis Kalanick also made the list, as it happens).

The ABJ also noted Republican District 8 Council member Ellen Troxclair as part of a "fiscally conservative faction" of the Austin City Council along with Zimmerman.
One week, they might try to cut economic development funds on principle, the next week they are fighting against increased regulation of ride-hailing companies. While they may not bring a lot of votes to their side, the[y] represent an increasingly influential strain of politics seen here and across the country.
Read more:
http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/2015/12/30/5-economic-development-leaders-to-watch-in-2016.html#g3
While it may be true that Troxclair and Zimmerman make up a small minority of the 10-member council, many issues are not decided along conservative-liberal lines. Sometimes they result in some "strange bedfellow" arrangements, such as Zimmerman's support of Democratic Council member Ora Houston's plan to build the new Travis County Civil Courthouse in East Austin.

Fiscal conservatives and Republicans make up a large portion of Austin's electorate, and more so in Travis County as a whole. A Republican candidate running in a county-wide race will usually secure anywhere between 38-42% of the vote -- a figure that's increasing year-by-year. Now that's something to watch!

Petition drive aims to give Uber/Lyft decision to the people

Although the Austin City Council left vague the specifics on a December decision to crack down on transportation network companies (such as Uber and Lyft), opponents to further regulation aren't taking any chances.

Having worked over the Christmas break to organize the resistance, a coalition calling itself Ridesharing Works for Austin announced it will be hosting a petition drive to place the current city rules on TNCs on the ballot for a yay or nay vote by, not City Council members, but the voters of Austin via a ballot referendum.

The petition will be at Austin Java (1206 Parkway, near North Lamar and 12th Street) from Tuesday, Dec. 29, through Monday, Jan. 4. Supporters plan to be at Austin Java from 7-11 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. daily in order to gather the 20,000 signatures necessary to put a measure on the next ballot -- though they may aim for many more as those on the other side will be looking for any reason they can to disqualify signatures. (Download a petition here.)

Texas reigning king of speed traps

The Watchdog.org Texas bureau expanded on a recent report that lists the Lone Star State (yes, our beloved oasis of economic freedom and individual responsibility) as the most likely place in the United States to get caught speeding.

It may have more to do with population and size, as California, Florida, and Ohio also round out the top of the list. Smaller states would, logically, have fewer "speed traps" and fewer citations issued.

But we'll let Watchdog Texas off easy this time:
Texas is infested with more speed traps than any other state, according to a new study by the National Motorists Association.
The NMA compiled five years of data from a website it maintains, The National Speed Trap Exchange, and found Texas had far and away the highest speed trap count, with 1383 locations.
The list falls off quickly, with Cali[f]ornia in second at 1076, Florida in third at 792 and Ohio in fourth with 680.

Cahn: AG provides rearguard for campus carry movement

Local activist Adam Cahn has posted a copy of Attorney General Ken Paxton's opinion on campus carry. According to Cahnman's Musings ...
The opinion ... lays a solid foundation should litigation on this issue become necessary. Bottom Line: If this is headed to court, Paxton's opinion is a strong place to start.

NRO: Pulliam weighs in on Green vs. Green judicial race

National Review Online picked up Travis County resident Mark Pulliam's thoughts on the upcoming statewide judicial races. According to Pulliam, voters have a choice between ...
A glib, attention-seeking showman with no judicial experience versus a seasoned judge with a solid record. The March 1 primary will not only determine the Republican nominee for [Texas Supreme Court] Place 5, it will serve as a referendum on the wisdom of judicial elections. Will Texas primary voters see through this unseemly stunt?
Strong words. We're certain supporters of the challenging candidate would disagree, and that there is a reasons why the Texas Constitution allows for elected judges in certain capacities.

Who are you supporting? Let us know in the comments section below.

UPDATES: Pulliam has submitted other articles for NRO recently on the Texas statewide judicial races. We're not taking sides: these are provided for the sake of discourse and Pulliam's accomplishment of becoming a regular judicial issues columnist:

Obama Admin kills Austin culinary academy

Score another jobs-kill for the Obama Administration. This one is sure to chisel away at Austin's emerging foodie community.

According to BuzzFeed:
[Le Cordon Bleu's] advertisements, featuring white-coated chefs with flashing knives entreating students to “follow your passion,” were shown frequently in the 2000s. But Le Cordon Bleu’s trade degrees — which had seen huge surges in popularity during the recession — were threatened by the Obama administration’s gainful employment rule, which cuts off federal financial aid to schools where graduates borrow money at high rates to pay for school but earn little after graduation.
This begs the question: Will the Obama Administration start shutting down state-funded colleges and universities soon? It would only be fair.

The Texas Culinary Academy in Austin became Le Cordon Bleu circa 2009. Perhaps its most famous alumnus, Paul Qui, won Season 9 of "Top Chef."

On the bright side: it looks like there's now an immediate, local market for a private-sector chef school. Just don't count on federal aid.

2016 Travis County Republican and Democratic Primary candidates

Candidate filings for the 2016 Primary are in!  While it appears Democrats still have a near-lock on judicial and countywide races, Republicans are providing some serious contenders who could make for some heated match-ups in November and bring the Austin metro area further to the right.

Below are all the candidates running for Travis County races in the 2016 Primary. Democrats are in blue and Republicans are in red.

Mackowiak: Innovation key to Charter School success

Travis County GOP Vice Chairman Matt Mackowiak defended Charter Schools in his recent column in the Austin American-Statesman:
The only thing that should matter at a school is performance. We know what works: English immersion, high standards, college preparedness, school choice for parents, closing failing schools and paying good teachers more while moving bad teachers out of the profession.
Why should a parent have their children locked into a failing school? Why should a zip code determine a child’s fate?

VIDEO: The best liberal argument yet for campus gun control!

Our minds have been changed.

There was a mass shooting simulation near the University of Texas today -- a "crisis performance event" organizers called it. Many conservatives and gun rights activists thought the event went too far, while a smaller number thought it drew necessary attention to parts of the campus area where students, faculty, and staff 21 and up cannot sufficiently protect themselves against armed attackers.

But out of the chaos came the strongest argument yet for stringent gun control. Watch the video above for the pinnacle moment of the counter-protest, led by students.

No, we didn't secede, but Texans can still make a stand

The State Republican Executive Committee received a Texas-size share of media attention for its 16-34 defeat of a motion to allow a secession resolution on the upcoming Primary election ballot.

But did you know there are still some important, though non-binding, questions to appear on the March 1 ticket? Here they are ...
Proposition 1. Texas should replace the property tax system with an alternative other than an income tax and require voter approval to increase the overall tax burden.
Proposition 2. Texas cities and counties should be required to comply with federal immigration laws or be penalized by loss of state funds.
Proposition 3. Texas should prohibit governmental entities from collecting dues for labor unions through deductions from public employee paychecks.
Proposition 4. Texas and its citizens should strongly assert 10th Amendment Rights guranteed by the U.S. Constitution, which states "The powers not delegated to the United States by this Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respetively, or to the people."

Austin Council candidates demand answers on why opponents received $56,000 in city funds

Two Austin Council candidates are demanding answers why their opponents received nearly $56,000 in city funds.

'Hungary's Ron Paul' speaks to Austinites

Over the past week, a rising star in Hungarian politics shared his story of standing (sometimes alone) for free market values and individualism with Austin conservatives and liberty activists.

Independent Member of Parliament Zoltán Kész spoke to the World Affairs Council at Austin Community College and Liberty Action Texas, among other stops.

Kész, who broke the 2/3 super-majority held by Hungary's ruling party, Fidesz, became the target of media scorn upon winning his election at age 41 earlier this year. Since then, he has used his bully pulpit to expose corruption and expand the Free Market Foundation he helped to start in Hungary in 2011. Many have compared his lone-contender status to that of former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who often stood alone on opposition to government expansion.

5 things we simply don't get regarding prayer

Even though this is a local political blog, can we get theological for a moment?

Now that the lefties are practically in lockstep mocking prayer (and Nancy Pelosi is even criticizing moments of silence, for crying out loud!) this writer feels the need to express a few non-sectarian thoughts on God and the nature of prayer. Below are five things we tend to forget (or fail to grasp entirely) in our discourse about God's will and when conveying out intentions to seek God's blessings for those enduring hardship.

1. PRAYER IS NOT TELEPATHY. "Thoughts and prayers" do not "go out to the victims and their families." Prayers are requests to God. They go up to him. (And we highly doubt you are telepathic and can send thoughts across the continent and into someone else's head.) Though many may equate prayer with well-wishes, positive thinking, inward meditation, or even "good vibes," prayer as our Founding Fathers understood it is communication with the God in whom We Trust. Technically speaking, anyway.

Guns save lives

Taxpayer funds pushing new civil courthouse plan; Judge Dietz to receive $84/hour

The $287 million bond proposal for a new Travis County Civil Courthouse was given the ax last month by voting taxpayers. But that doesn't stop the County Commissioners from spending their money to bring it up again.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, retired District Judge John Dietz will get $84 per hour to come up with a new plan:
Dietz, who was the administrative judge when he retired in 2014, said Tuesday he will have two roles: helping the courts reorganize their business processes to “cope with reality” at the current facility — the overcrowded Heman Sweatt Travis County Courthouse — and helping the county find a new strategy for building a new facility.
Said bond opponent Bill Worsham in the article:
“His advice and experience is very valuable in a design process. We’re not in a design process ... This is part of the revolving door and the mechanism of having your friends and advisers on the public payroll.”
County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty, according to the report, took a more realistic tone regarding paying a consultant:

“I do think that, given the fact that the thing failed, the community needs to hear from the commissioners where we’re really headed"
More: www.statesman.com
It should be noted that Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt recently said in a Statesman video that Dietz was the one who originally called for the new courthouse.

Cahn: Zimmerman loss on refugee measure a win for public dialogue

Opinions on what to do with incoming Syrian refugees are varied -- with Gov. Greg Abbott flat-out opposed and the City of Austin ready to practically roll out the red carpet. Conservative commentator Adam Cahn notes that City Councilman Don Zimmerman's recent support of Abbott's position is a win for public discourse on the subject.
Bottom Line: Given how the votes on Council are structured (for now), the fix was in on this hearing before it began.  It still was a useful discussion to have and got several more Council members on the record.  If, God forbid, something happens a la Kate Stienle in San Francisco, the Council members who promoted this recklessly INSANE policy are going to OWN it.
More: http://acahnman.blogspot.com/2015/11/public-safety-committee-stiffs.html
Even though Zimmerman's resolution was ill-fated from the beginning, we agree that it was a useful exercise of representation government -- which was exactly why a majority of voters supported going from at-large seats on the Austin City Council to the 10-1 district plan.

Cahn: Jesus commanded us to engage in productive economic activity

Austin activist Adam Cahn gives us a sober reminder this Sunday that Jesus' teaching on wealth is often misunderstood and is sometimes misapplied in political discourse:
We understand that people will take scripture out of context to suit their agenda, but that doesn't lead to a productive discussion.  Nowhere is this more true than with Jesus' discussion of money in the Gospels.  Consider the following:
1. People LOVE to talk about how, at times, Jesus didn't have a lot of money (Matthew 8:20), but they neglect to mention that He had A LOT of rich friends:
For Adam's other two, see http://acahnman.blogspot.com/2015/11/three-popular-misconceptions-regarding.html

LEHMBERG WATCH: Prosecutor to challenge Dem favorite in DA race

An attorney who went after Rosemary Lehmberg following her drunk-driving arrest is reported to be in the heat over on the Democrat ticket. A rumored Republican challenger has yet to emerge.

Prosecutor Gary Cobb may have some company in next year’s race for Travis County district attorney after all.

Clock Boy situation could have easily been averted

"Clock Boy" Ahmed Mohamed's family is suing we the taxpayers for $15 million, and questions have arisen about how his situation may have been handled differently.

While we're concerned about the trend in public schools of using law enforcement to carry out discipline, we would like to suggest a long-forgotten alternative that requires no police intervention and could go a long way in preventing lawsuit abuse and this kind of misbehavior in our school hallways, regardless of a student's family's political or religious beliefs ...

Austin's ghost highways (or a history of Austin's ill-fated east-west traffic solutions)

Transportation planners hard at work on a 290/I-35 intersection circa 1970.
Building a successful east-west corridor is nowhere near a new challenge for Austin. Cutting through some of the most environmentally sensitive and visually attractive land in the Texas Hill Country has raised the ire of many residents throughout the years, particularly environmentalists.

This is a cycle we've been stuck in for over half a century is being repeated in Oak Hill as the Oak Hill Parkway is encountering some opposition. This time, by tree preservationists.

If you look carefully around town you will see the right-of-way and other tell-tale signs of preparation for several, aborted east-west routes through Austin. Below are few of those would-be projects from the annals of Austin transportation planning. Have a good cry when you're sitting in traffic tomorrow morning.

'Y' no solution to east-west Austin traffic?

Anyone who has ever driven east-to-west in Austin knows that there is something structurally wrong with transportation planning in the Capital City. And it's been that way for more than half a century.

That's why we have nothing but sympathy for the residents of Oak Hill. Once a sleepy small town to Austin's west with prolific arbors and rocky vistas, the area is now suburbia with one of the worst traffic snarls of the region due in part to Austin's horrendous planning for the future: "the Y."

However, even the overdue solution for that is facing resistance.

Austin's affordability reaching critical mass

Urban sprawl ... thanks in part to big government
If we ever needed more reasons to be concerned about Austin's growing affordability problem, news coverage this week provided plenty.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the city is considering ways to cut down on the number of APD squad cars in surrounding suburb driveways -- an admission that the city is becoming less affordable for necessary public servants such as law enforcement officers. In other words, the backbone of the city is headed to the 'burbs.
Austin officials are in the early stages of developing an array of monetary incentives to get hundreds of police officers living in suburban communities to become city residents ... that could include a one-time moving expense payment, monthly stipends for owning a home in the city or a month of free rent for apartment dwellers.

Fmr. Bush aide: Obama Admin intelligence reports 'doctored'

Joe Allbaugh, FEMA director during the 9/11 attacks (public domain photo)
President George W. Bush's FEMA director and gubernatorial chief of staff pulled no punches during a call-in segment with an Austin radio station this morning.

"We are a ship without a captain as far as I can tell. Pentagon staff are instructed to keep quiet or retire -- If they go public while they are in uniform they are subject to penalties or court-martialing," said Joe Allbaugh on KOKE-FM, 98.5, Tuesday morning.

Troxclair: Affordable housing dollars should go to ... affordable housing

The Austin City Council Audit and Finance Committee reviewed a city auditor's report that revealed some disturbing news regarding the stewardship of tax dollars earmarked for "affordable housing."

According to the Austin American-Statesman:
The report, which examined programs in the city’s Neighborhood Housing and Community Development department, also said the city lacks “clear goals and numerical targets” for affordable housing so “any outcome can be seen as a success.” The department also overstated the amount of affordable housing created over three years by roughly 3,000 units, the audit said. ...
“If we’re putting money to this purpose we need to make sure that it is translating into affordable housing,” [District 8 City] Council member Ellen Troxclair said.
Full story at: http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/local/audit-austin-isnt-properly-monitoring-affordable-h/npPPS

Meanwhile, the City of Austin continues its war on poorer areas of town in the name of "redevelopment." Exhibit A: the East Riverside Corridor Master Plan, which will no doubt boost rent on some of the more affordable apartments and rental properties in town.

Cahn: Formula 1 never had the consent of the governed

F1 has been a tremendous tourism draw for Travis County, attracting some of the world's wealthiest patrons of motor sports. The Elroy-based Circuit of the Americas has been a success, though attendance has (as expected) dropped some after the scent of new asphalt diminished.

So when Gov. Greg Abbott agreed to reduce the state's tax contribution from $25 million to $19.6 million, criticism -- especially from those in nations accustomed to corporate welfare and mounting public debt -- complained. F1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone even threatened the future of Austin F1 races (welcome to Texas).

Travis County activist blogger Adam Cahn sums up our thoughts nicely -- though we would like to add that there are plenty of private-sector solutions available here in the Land of the Free (e.g. more NASCAR-style sponsorships).
Formula 1 subsidies never had the consent of the governed, either locally or statewide. ... That being said, if organizers want to hold future races hostage to continued subsidies from the state of Texas, they should feel free to not let the door hit them in the rear end on the way out.

Children actually SAVE parents money in the long run

About 120 women are suing drug company Endo because an alleged packaging error they say resulted in unplanned pregnancies ... and, along with that, the expense of raising children.

The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania last week. The class members hail from 26 states, and it is unclear at the time of writing if a Texan is among them. According to the suit, the birth control pill manufacturer distributed pills (see full list at the bottom of this post) in 2011 with incorrect markings and packaging -- resulting in 113 unforeseen pregnancies in 26 states. Fully 94 of the women carried the babies to term. Other state courts have rejected similar lawsuits.

The class is reportedly seeking millions in damages, including, in a few cases, the costs of raising children through adulthood (allegedly because of the birth control goof-up). While many prestigious sources put the cost-estimate of raising a child from 0 to adulthood at $200,000 to $250,000, that's not a universally held figure.

According to one source we found, a money management site called TheSimpleDollar.com, children can actually bring in money at certain points along the way. Here's the breakdown from author Trent Hamm, based on a working husband and working wife with two children in Iowa at the onset of the Obama Administration (costs have certainly gone up since then, but bear with us!). His comments are in italics below and are worth a read (full article).

Anti-taxpayer lawsuit filed by the City of Austin thrown out of court

An attempt by the City of Austin to loosen taxpayer protections was thrown out of court today.

The city has 30 days to appeal, according to the Austin American-Statesman:
The city filed the unprecedented lawsuit in August to seek the reappraisal of thousands of Travis County commercial properties and vacant lands. The lawsuit had also asked the court to strike down “equal and uniform” provisions in state law that allow a property owner to protest a value higher than the median value of comparable properties.

In the same way conservative opposition to liberal machinations is referred to as "backwards," "judgmental," and any variation of "-phobic," Kenric Ward with Watchdog.org's Texas Bureau coins a new phrase for liberal grandstanding.

Is the persistence of the downtown Austin liberal establishment in building an unnecessarily large civil courthouse in a congested area an example of political courage or "mulish stupidity?"

Veterans Day Parade to go on despite political correctness

A Veterans Day parade is a community celebration that should never be politicized.

Sadly, a change in the official billing for the Travis County/City of Austin Veterans Day parade reflects a degree of behind-the-scenes politicking and social engineering.

The wording has gone from a proud headline reading "Presented by Travis County and the City of Austin" to a disclaimer: "... not an official Travis County or City of Austin activity" (see screenshots of the county's Veterans Day Parade web page below).

Judge Eckhardt angrily rebukes voters, calls rejection of bond 'not a rejection of the project'

Judge Sarah Eckhardt, via Facebook
It was the first election night in memory that Travis County Republicans got everything they wanted.

All state constitution amendments supported by the Travis GOP passed by wide margins.

The $1,000-per-pet Pflugerville animal shelter was rejected.

News of the defeat of the so-called "bathroom ordinance" in Houston enlivened conservatives.

And earlier that day, a proposal to remove support from the annual downtown Veterans Day parade because of its inclusion of Confederate soldier tributes was tabled in a county meeting.

But most auspicious to Austin-area conservatives was the defeat of the $287 million civil courthouse bond.

LEHMBERG WATCH: appeal of police shooting case likely a political move

In a legal maneuver being called "a political move," Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg announced she intends on appealing the dismissal of an Austin policeman who shot a bank robber.

“Whatever it takes to put that in motion, that is what we did this morning. I intend to pursue it as far as it takes," Lehmberg said, via the Austin American-Statesman.

On Oct. 29, a federal judge dismissed a manslaughter charge against former Austin police officer Charles Kleinert. The opinion referred to an 1890 federal Supreme Court ruling that protects law enforcement from prosecution in the line of duty.

Kleinert shot the robber in 2013 -- a move criticized as reckless by prosecutors. The robber was shot once in the neck and soon died.

Lehmberg, who was convicted that same year of, and served 45 days for, drunk driving, will likely appeal Kleinert's dismissal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

10th Planned Parenthood expose video hits home

Footage courtesy of Center for Medical Progress, via YouTube.

The latest Planned Parenthood expose video hits close to home -- at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America office on East Seventh Street in the heart of Austin and Travis County.

We include the video from the Center for Medical Progress above, and their (abridged) press release below. Reader and viewer discretion is advised.

Vote boost planned for Uber and Lyft (wait ... is that even on the ballot?)

Footage of Councilman Don Zimmerman (Credit: Adam Cahn)

No, there is not a city, county, or state proposition involving transportation network companies such as Uber, Lyft, and others.

But District 6 City Councilman Don Zimmerman unveiled a compelling plan at a meeting Monday night: using early voting turnout on an otherwise slow day as a means to gauge support for Uber and Lyft.

Cahnman's Musings has more.

TxTag offers motorists breakfast tacos

CEDAR PARK -- Last legislative session it was revealed that 30,000 TxTag users were not billed correctly and as many as 3.5 million motorists were not billed on time. Oops.

Perhaps that's a reason why the Central Texas Mobility Authority hosted a Customer Appreciation Day at the now-unused 183-A checkpoint gantry toll plaza just north of the Travis County line in Cedar Park. We just had to investigate.

Pflugerville Mayor's 'time capusle' statement on $1,000-per-animal shelter bond

In recognition of "Back to the Future Day," we decided to do a little time travel to ... this past summer.

Pflugerville Mayor Jeff Coleman released the below statement against the Pflugerville pet shelter proposal in July. The Mayor is now legally prohibited from discussing the matter since it has been committed to a ballot. But we're under no such prohibitions. We release this statement from past Mayor Coleman in support of present Mayor Coleman!

Early voting goes through Oct. 30, with election day on Nov. 3, on the pet shelter bond.

VIDEO: Zimmerman reveals attack strategy against high water bills on Fox 7

The Z-man isn't letting the short-lived theft of his pickup truck stop him.

Austin City Councilman Don Zimmerman was on the Fox 7 News Edge Tuesday night (Oct. 20) for the 9 o'clock broadcast to lay out his plan to stop the increase in water utility bills across Austin.

See more on Fox 7's website. Travis Tracker exclusive bonus material below ... involving more drama surrounding the pickup truck scare.

Early voting numbers portend slightly higher voter turnout for courthouse, amendments

Anywhere above 5 percent is a respectable turnout for a Constitutional Amendment Election during Early Voting. Comparatively speaking, anyway.

And as it stands now, .57 percent of Travis County's 644,934 registered voters have cast their ballots. This may not sound like much, but multiply this over the two-week early voting period, factor in increased awareness of the election, and we're on track to meet or exceed that expected 5 percent-plus for early voting. Election day will likely exceed 10 percent overall.

Presidential candidate draws enthusiastic crowd

Courtesy: Charlotte Glenn

Presidential contender Ben Carson made a stop in Austin today, drawing what local television news station report Mark Wiggins of KVUE called "a modest but enthusiastic" crowd.

Appearing at the Research Boulevard Costco in Northwest Austin to sign copies of his book, "A More Perfect Union," Carson attracted a good showing of fans and supporters, many of whom took a long lunch break to attend the noontime event. Carson was until recently on the board of directors for Costco.

This makes up for a snub by an Austin ISD school, which denied Carson an opportunity to speak in Austin a second time this week.

Hidden camera activists begin to release footage

Whether a group of secret-camera-wielding activists actually had any noteworthy videos of Texas Legislators was in question until last week.

The controversial American Phoenix Foundation released its first round of videos -- one of which shows a House Republican allegedly intoxicated and belligerent after a floor session, and another with a caption suggesting a House Democrat had interactions with a crime family (though he has since claimed it was an embellishment in casual conversation).

Some donors have pulled funding from the group. And even the conservative-leaning Breitbart Texas has agreed to not publish the videos. However, the 836 hours of video the group claims to have taken are likely to surface as campaigns for re-elections mount. It's best our readers be aware.

What do you think of the American Phoenix Foundation? Are their activities discouraging legislators from interacting with the general public? Is secret camera footage driving unethical behavior further away from journalists and citizen watchdogs? Or are these videos finally bringing the truth to light?

Let us know your opinion.

Local races to appear on Nov. 3 ballot across Travis County

With all the buzz surrounding the Civil Courthouse bond and seven Texas constitutional amendment propositions, it's easy to forget that there are several important races in towns across Travis County on the November 2015 ballot.

See below for a list of all the local ballot items appearing on the Nov. 3 ballot. Early voting runs from today through Friday, Oct. 30.

All 7 Texas Constitutional Amendment props deserve support

We congratulate the conservative leadership of the Texas Legislature and the Governor in handing the voters of Texas a digestible list of seven proposed amendments to the Constitution. We have analyzed each and determined that, while there are pros and cons to all of them, these ballot measures have their roots in genuine needs brought to the floor of the People's house.

We join the Travis County Republican Executive Committee in supporting all seven of the propositions, which we include below (followed by some quick thoughts on each, and a handy voter's guide you can take into the polling place with you). These measures will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot, with early voting taking place from Oct. 19-30.

Dawkins calls GOP Presidential candidates 'disgraceful' for believing in a Creator (it was actually aliens!)

For some reason, the theological beliefs of our presidential hopefuls are on trial ... yet again.

The Blaze picked up on two situations involving this reverse-crusade against the pious: One where Bill O'Reilly grills Ben Carson on his belief in the age of the earth (he's a surgeon, not a geophysicist!); and another with the headline:

Atheist Richard Dawkins Calls It ‘Disgraceful’ That Presidential Hopefuls Are Creationists ...

What's even more "disgraceful" is that the pop-Atheism icon Dawkins himself finds it an "intriguing possibility" that god-like aliens placed life on earth -- but that the alien "seed race" must have themselves evolved from lower life-forms billions of years prior.

We only wish we were kidding. See video from the pro-Intelligent Design in schools documentary "Expelled" below.

(By the way, Ben Carson will be at the Costco on Research Boulevard/US 183 in Northwest Austin on Monday, Oct. 19, from noon to around 2 p.m. for a book-signing if you feel like offering him your moral support.)

Travis Republicans come out strong against bond debt

The Travis County Republican Party voted unanimously to oppose a new civil courthouse bond Wednesday evening (Oct. 14), citing tax concerns and access as their reasons to be firmly against.

The county party received immediate media attention when it joined Travis County Taxpayers Union as the primary forces dedicated to stopping the $287 million bond proposal dead in its tracks. The gauntlet has been thrown.

We include the full text of the resolution -- including a related resolution opposing an opulent dog shelter bond proposal in Pflugerville, below (even the Mayor thinks its extravagant, at nearly $1,000 per animal).

But now is YOUR chance to weigh in on the new civil courthouse proposal. Look to the left-hand side of this screen and take our poll.

State budget: the 20,000-foot view

Sometimes in politics you get so bogged down in specifics that you miss the big picture.

But thanks to Comptroller Glen Hegar's competent staff, we have a handy chart with infographics that puts things into a sobering perspective. This is based on his "budget certification," which is required by the Texas Constitution before it can be approved by the Legislature.

Mackowiak: The Case for Speaker Flores

Rep. Bill Flores (Tx-17)
Will the U.S. House of Representatives see its fourth Texas Speaker soon?

Travis County Republican Party Vice Chairman and campaign strategist Matt Mackowiak laid out a convincing argument in favor of Republican Rep. Bill Flores (Tx-17) of College Station Tuesday (Oct. 14) as a contributor to The Hill -- a prominent D.C. political blog.

Flores, as well as colleague Rep. Michael McCaul (Tx-10), have been named as possible successors to Speaker John Boehner, who announced his pending resignation.

Other Texans who have held the Speaker's gavel were John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner (1931-33), Sam Rayburn (1941-43, 45-47, 49-51), and Jim Wright (1987-89). All were Democrats.
"Indeed, the Speakership is a very tough job, but Flores is an extremely effective fundraiser (Texas and energy, primarily), a good listener, has excellent instincts and builds strong relationships. He [Flores] has a built-in whip operation through the [Republican Study Committee] and a strong base within the Texas Republican House delegation, which has 25 members."

How to smoke a true Central Texas style brisket

Who needs sauce, really?
Though Austin is home to a large number of vegans, vegetarians, semi-vegetarians, and would-be meat eaters operating under a sadly mistaken assumption that cattle production pokes holes in the ozone layer, that doesn't stop us from being one of the barbecue hot-spots of the world.

That hasn't stopped the Austin City Council from (perhaps inadvertently) stomping out our blazing market for smoked meats. While we don't predict such proposed ordinances will ever go far (Austin is home to the world's only known barbecue editor, after all), a shortage of barbecue would be one of the worst scenarios imaginable to a Texan. And that would be a loss to the entire world, as Central Texas is home to its own unique style of 'cue, up there with Kansas City style, Carolina, Memphis, etc.

That's why we would like to arm you with the skills necessary to become a barbecue ninja! Follow these instructions and you'll master the art of smoking a true Texas Hill Country style brisket that will wow your neighbors and convert vegetarians.

Congratulations Robert Thomas!

We offer our sincere congratulations to Robert Thomas, the new Chairman of the Texas Facilities Commission!

Robert was the Travis GOP's 2012 nominee for Texas House District 48.

More recently, he was a pioneer in Austin's new geographic representation system, running for the newly created District 10 in a non-partisan race. During his race, he picked up some stellar endorsements such as the Austin Police Association.

Read the announcement about Gov. Abbott's excellent selection here: http://gov.texas.gov/news/appointment/21474

First post!

We're truly blessed to live in, not only the best place on earth, but also the epicenter of big decisions that go on to shape Texas and the world.

And while there is a treasure trove of blogs, social media pages, broadcasts, podcasts, and other outlets for conservative takes on current events here in the Austin metro area, we've long lacked a central platform for items which pertain to political life in Central Texas.

It's our hope that this blog can serve as a "portal" to track the news and commentary shared by Travis County Republicans, independent conservatives, and other small government advocates.

In addition, we hope to occasionally provide our own coverage on situations that the mainstream media won't touch ... and the liberals won't acknowledge!

Welcome to the Travis Tracker. Are you tracking with us?
