Legislative priorities draft approved by temporary platform committee

The 31 members of the Temporary Platform Committee of the 2016 Republican Party of Texas Convention came up with a list of "Legislative Priorities" this evening. When approved, this list will appear as a subset of the official state platform.
From highest vote count to lowest, here are the priorities:
  • Abolish abortion (29)
  • Secure the border (23)
  • Constitutional carry (22)
  • Article V convention (17) Replace Property Tax
  • School choice (16)
Some items not appearing on this list but which were discussed include abolishing property taxes in favor of a non-income tax alternative and prohibiting "civil asset forfeiture" (popularized by a recent Oklahoma decision to do so).

Also rounding out the list were banning "Sharia Law" courts and de-funding any governmental entity which violates immigration laws.

Keep in mind that they are subject to the Permanent Platform Committee, the State Republican Executive Committee, and the body of convention Delegates. It's also subject to reconsideration by the Temporary Platform Committee. Ideally, these priorities will be used during the 85th Legislature to show which issues the GOP would like to see pursued as opposed to the hundreds of planks appearing in the usual platform report.
