by Jennifer Fleck, Travis GOP Chair
Will the Democrats use false narratives to oust their own duly elected candidate? Akin to Joe Biden winning the 2025 Presidential nomination by the voters, but the “party” supplanting their own nominee.
So much for democracy.
The first sign something was awry came on March 3, 2026, during election night activities at Central Count. After early voting results were released, county officials appeared noticeably surprised by the outcome of the Democratic Chair race.
The second sign came during the post-election hand count audit process. Under Texas Election Code Section 127.201, the Secretary of State is responsible for selecting up to three races or propositions for auditing. In practice, two races are selected statewide while local election officials choose the third race. In Travis County, County Clerk Dyana Mercado-Limon — a Democrat and former Democratic County Chair herself — selected the County Chair race for the hand count audit.
Think about that for a second.
The Senate race? Sure.
The Attorney General race? Makes sense.
The obscure Democrat County Chair race? Weird.
It wasn’t until yesterday when I read the article in the Austin Bulldog that I understood the entire landscape and took notice that the Democrats were conducting business as usual.
The “Party” establishment does not approve of Jessica and they aim to undermine their voters and elect their own. We saw them do this famously in 2024, when they removed Biden and installed Kamala Harris, who had received no votes.
For reference, the Texas Democratic Party website states, “We are committed to a democracy that empowers every Texan to reach their full potential. We know that building a stronger, more inclusive Texas begins with working together to strengthen our party and our state.”
These are my issues with Democrat hypocrisy:
First, although the Republican Party is being blamed for possibly planning future attack ads against Jessica’s trans identity ... that has not happened. Jessica even naively blames “those who want to divide us instead of focusing on Paxton” for dredging up her past. His/her attackers are Democrat Party Establishment. Instead of blaming Republicans, the TCDP should own their own latent bias, bold discrimination and outlandish bigotry. For a party who is always pointing fingers and labeling others, they are wildly guilty.
Second, the Texas Democratic Party platform explicitly supports rehabilitation, reentry programs, and reducing collateral consequences for individuals with prior criminal records. Democrats routinely argue that people deserve second chances and should not be defined forever by mistakes made years — or decades — earlier, and yet, although Jessica committed crimes as a teen and/or more that 20 years ago; and some recent minor traffic citations, “they” believe Jessica’s past disqualifies her for party leadership. It reminds me of another imperfect person whose past they won’t let us forget. Truly TDS.
Finally, the petition raises concerns that Cohen wore a Travis County Democratic Party shirt while voting in the Primary and allegedly argued that doing so was legal. This is genuinely funny! Democrats portray themselves as the guardians of election integrity, civic virtue, and proper conduct. Watching them publicly accuse one of their own leaders of violating election rules is a level of political irony that practically writes itself.
For years Democrats have accused Republicans of being anti-democratic, intolerant of diversity, and unwilling to accept election outcomes. Yet here we are watching Democrat activists attempt to remove a duly elected Chair because they don't approve of who won.
If Republicans were doing this, there would be wall-to-wall outrage.
When Democrats do it, it's apparently "protecting the party."
The lesson from Travis County is simple: the biggest threat to Jessica Cohen's political future isn't Republican opposition. It's Democratic insiders who seem determined to prove that democracy is wonderful — right up until voters make a choice they didn't expect and don’t like.
